Hi Damsels!
Many of us have fallen prey of getting home late, especially at night, and then the last thing we want to do is wash our faces. Well, one would ask; “is sleeping in makeup really that bad?” Uh, yeah, apparently. I know you are likely wondering just how bad this is.
Many a time, we’ve been told to wash off our makeup before bed, but, still, questions linger. So what really are the side effects of sleeping in makeup?
These six things happen when you wear makeup to bed;
1. Clogged pores:
One night of sleeping in your makeup is unlikely to cause long-lasting damage to your skin; your pores become more clogged and this eventually results in the formation of a microcomedone, which attracts the acne-causing bacteria to your pores.
2. Premature ageing:
You accumulate a lot of oxidative stress during the day thus, when you sleep in your makeup you are not giving your skin a chance to recover, which can lead to premature aging. Free radicals from the environment remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night.
3. Eye irritation:
Mascara and eyeliner can be rubbed by your pillow and end up in your eyes, which can lead to significant eye irritation. It is therefore recommended that you keep makeup remover pads by your bed, to wipe across your face and eyes on those nights when you don’t have time to properly cleanse before getting into bed. Sleeping in eye makeup repeatedly may result in the clogging of the tiny hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelids.
4. Lack of skin renewal:
Foundations and thick, oil-based primers are often the worst offenders. They prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally at night, causing blackheads, acne and dullness. The best thing to do on such nights when you don’t have the energy is to wipe it off with a cotton swab and makeup remover or baby wipes.
5. Broken eyelashes:
Here’s another mascara bummer. Left-on mascara can cause eyelashes to become brittle, break easily and even shed faster. You would be doing yourself more harm than good when you fail to remove this.
6. Chapped lips:
Unfortunately, that fabulous plumping lipstick could also be zapping your pout of moisture if you leave it on too long; sleeping with any type of lipstick will result in dryness and chapping. Reach for moisturizing lipbalm instead.
Sure, makeup is good for every lady, but ensure that you don’t wear it to bed!
